Stickman and the Jolly Christmas Postman

child with arts and crafts

This month in the Buttercups, we’ve been busy exploring our core books ‘Stick Man’ and ‘The Jolly Christmas Postman ’. The children enjoyed a special cooking activity where they made deconstructed stick-man sausage rolls, using chicken sausages for most and cheese and onion for our vegetarian friends. They practised their palmer grip beautifully while brushing melted butter onto their pastries. Our cozy Stick Man den was a big hit, complete with a sensory basket filled with natural materials such as leaves, pinecones, and wooden objects. The Buttercups used their fine motor skills to explore different textures and shapes. We also created colourful leaf prints using large leaves collected from the garden. Inspired by The Jolly Christmas Postman, the children helped with lots of “deliveries,” stacking parcels and posting letters into our Buttercups postbox . The Buttercups also engaged in a creative activity where they used Coco Powder mixed with water to make brown paint to create their very own Christmas Puddings. It’s been a lovely month full of creativity, sensory play, and story-inspired fun!

In the Orchid Room children have been fully immersed in our core books “Stickman” and “The Jolly Christmas Postman”, which have inspired lots of creativity, imagination and festive excitement. We would like to say a big thank you to our parents who kindly helped us collect natural resources, the children came back so excited and used sticks, leaves and twigs to create wonderful Stickman collages, and also had great fun using construction Stickle Bricks to build their very own Stickmen, helping to develop their fine motor skills and storytelling. With the weather turning very cold, the children enjoyed a special treat of warm hot chocolate, which created the perfect cosy moment to transition into our “Jolly Christmas Postman” story. Inspired by the book, the children worked together to transform our role play area into a post office, where they enjoyed delivering letters and parcels to their friends, supporting social skills, communication and imaginative play. A few of us took our annual trip to choose our Christmas Tree, this was so much fun as Miss Juvina joined us!

The Daisies have been having lots of fun learning and reading our core books this month ‘Stick Man’ and ‘The Jolly Christmas Postman’. All children worked collaboratively together to make a large stickman collage, using different brown materials like tissue paper and felt to create his body, we even added some leaves and googley eyes. Stickman has really come alive on the Daisy room wall. The children also had lots of fun re-telling the story to friends, making play dough stickmen and learning the makaton sign for home. The Daisies have enjoyed learning how to work in their very own role play post office. They have been using stickers, wrapping paper, post-it notes, mini bows, cards and envelopes to write their own messages and taking them to the post office to be posted to friends and family. We even had a go at making our very own Daisy post box to post all our Christmas cards. We have also been getting stuck into many different sensory experiences within our learning environment, making winter mud pies, playing in our snow man sensory bin, scooping and pouring with snow flakes, making large snow globes and even designing and creating our very own Christmas cards. What an eventful month it has been!
